How would you describe your role and responsibilities at Sunrise Irrigation?
I’m a sod foreman, so my role is really a combination of leading a crew and making sure the job gets done correctly from start to finish. I help coordinate the day-to-day work, make sure we’re staying on schedule, handle any issues that come up in the field, and make sure the finished product meets our standards. A big part of my job is also communicating with customers and making sure they’re happy with the work we leave behind. It can be demanding work, especially in the Florida heat, but I take a lot of pride in being able to lead a crew and get a property looking completely different by the end of the day.
Tell me a bit about your background and where you’re from.
I’m originally from Fox Lake, Illinois, and I eventually made my way to Iowa, where I went to the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in Exercise Science. After graduating, I moved down to Florida and started working in the irrigation and landscaping industry. My career has taken a direction I probably didn’t expect when I was in college, but I’ve really enjoyed the challenge of learning a completely different field and working my way into a leadership position.
How do you stay motivated and continue to grow in your career?
For me, a lot of my motivation comes from wanting to keep getting better at whatever I’m doing. I don’t like staying comfortable for too long. I try to learn from the people around me, take on more responsibility, and figure out how I can make things run more efficiently. I also like setting goals for myself and seeing how far I can push myself. I think there’s always something you can improve on, whether that’s your leadership, your work ethic, or just how you handle different situations.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I’d love to visit the Swiss Alps. There’s something about being surrounded by massive mountains, seeing the scenery in person, and being somewhere that feels completely different from everyday life. I’d want to spend a couple weeks exploring, hiking, seeing the different towns, and just taking in the views. It seems like the kind of place where you could actually slow down, disconnect for a bit, and appreciate where you are.
